Allred Statement on the Tragic Death of Georgia Woman Because of Inability to Access Abortion

DALLAS – Today, Congressman Colin Allred released the following statement on the tragic death of Amber Thurman, a Georgia woman, who passed away because Georgia’s abortion ban prevented doctors from performing a crucial, lifesaving procedure. 

“Amber Thurman’s tragic death was entirely preventable and it is because in Georgia, as well as Texas, women cannot access life-saving healthcare because of abortion bans that go too far and put women’s lives at risk,” said Allred. “My heart breaks for Amber’s family and friends, but it doesn’t have to be this way. We can fire politicians like Ted Cruz who are responsible for these harmful bans and want to make them nationwide, and elect a Senator who will ensure every woman across our nation can access the life-saving care they need.”

Amber Thurman’s death marks the first public incident of a preventable abortion-related death. It is a stark reminder of the human cost of these laws and the urgent need for action to restore womens’ reproductive freedom.

Allred has long championed protecting women’s right to access abortion, has been a leading voice against restricting women’s right to interstate travel, and has voted to codify Roe v. Wade’s protections to restore national abortion access. He also supports codifying protection for IVF in federal law and has worked to expand access to affordable birth control and over-the-counter contraception.
