With Expected Samsung Announcement of a Huge Expansion in Taylor, Remember Cruz Opposed the CHIPS Act
DALLAS – This week, the U.S. Department of Commerce is expected to announce that Samsung will receive a substantial federal investment to help expand operations in the Taylor-based manufacturing facility, creating jobs and strengthening Texas’ position as a leader in semiconductor manufacturing. These funds were made possible by the CHIPS and Science Act, which Congressman Colin Allred voted for and proudly championed in the House.
The effort to pass the CHIPS Act was bipartisan and was supported by Texas Republicans like Senator John Cornyn, Congresswoman Kay Granger and Congressman Michael McCaul. Ted Cruz voted no on the CHIPS Act.
Cruz’s record:
- Not only did Cruz vote no, but he said in a statement after voting no that the bill took the “wrong approach.”
- He doubled down on opposing the specific provisions that Samsung is taking advantage of by telling NBC DFW, “I think bad things happen when the Federal government is giving billions of dollars to private companies.”
- This is not new for Cruz. He has voted against or opposed nearly every single major bipartisan bill over the last few years including:
- The CHIPS and Science Act,
- The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law,
- The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act,
- The Senate Bipartisan Border Agreement,
- And recent bipartisan government funding legislation that will help hire a record 22,000 border agents.
When news of Samsung’s increased investment as a result of the CHIPS Act broke last week Allred released the following statement:
“Once again the CHIPS Act is delivering for our state. I look forward to hearing more details as they become available but we all know that big things happen in Texas when we work together.
“It’s a shame that Ted Cruz time and time again chooses politics over job creation, over leading the world in high-tech manufacturing and over what is best for Texas. I will always work to put Texas first, and I welcome Samsung’s proposed investment.
“Texans deserve a Senator who will put our state first and work to build on this progress for Texas.”
Allred has also championed bipartisan permitting reform that would streamline semiconductor manufacturing projects that receive CHIPS Act funds.
