ICYMI: In El Paso Times Interview, Allred Discusses His Efforts to Secure the Border and Fix Our Broken Immigration System

“Allred’s position varies wildly from that of Cruz, who has so far during his time in the Senate taken a hands-off approach to immigration legislation  while using crises at the border as fodder for his reelection bids.”

DALLAS – Today, the El Paso Times published an interview with Congressman Colin Allred that outlines the stark contrast between Allred’s efforts to work across the aisle to fix the crisis at the border and Ted Cruz’s longstanding record of inaction.

From the El Paso Times:

  • U.S. Rep. Colin Allred…said his opponent’s unwillingness to act on meaningful immigration reform continues to hurt Texans in border communities and beyond.
  • For me, this is personal”Allred said, noting his [connections] in the border town of Brownsville. “When we fail to act at the federal level, I think our border communities bear the brunt.”
  • “I know we can have a senator that will both help us secure the border and pass comprehensive immigration reform,” [Allred] added, “and who wants to see our border communities thrive.”
  • Allred recently backed a bipartisan immigration package that would have provided an infusion of funds for more immigration judges and more Border Patrol officers in an effort to relieve the backlog in an asylum process.
  • “It would have helped to address that short-term crisis,” [Allred] said, “and that’s the one Ted Cruz voted against.”
  • Allred’s position varies wildly from that of Cruz, who has so far during his time in the Senate taken a hands-off approach to immigration legislation while using crises at the border as fodder for his reelection bids.
  • “I think Ted Cruz only wants to talk about the problems at the border and I don’t think he wants to be part of the solution,” Allred said. “He doesn’t want to do anything to actually secure the border … what he wants to do is use it to scare people.”
  • “We do have a crisis at the border and we have to address it and we can do it,” [Allred] continued. “For 12 years, we know we’ve had a senator that won’t be a part of those conversations but, when I’m elected, we will.
