Allred Earns Endorsement of American Federation of Teachers and the United Food and Commercial Workers

DALLAS – Congressman Colin Allred today announced he has earned the support of the Texas American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW). Texas AFT is a statewide union with 66,000 members, including K-12 and community college educators, support staff, and retirees. UFCW represents grocery store, retail and food processing workers across Texas.

“As a former union member and the son of a public school teacher, I understand the challenges facing our educators and working families across Texas,” said Allred. “I’m honored to receive the endorsements of the Texas American Federation of Teachers and the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, and I am ready to work alongside them to beat Ted Cruz and give hard working Texans the leadership they deserve in the Senate.”

“Colin Allred has been a relentless champion for public education, understanding that our educators are the cornerstone of our future,” said Zeph Capo, President of Texas AFT. “Ted Cruz has neglected the needs of Texas schools and students, while Colin has shown an unwavering commitment to our public schools and ensuring that every Texan can get the education they need. Ted Cruz demonizes our school employees and politicizes our schools to further his school voucher agenda.  He needs to go.”

“Colin Allred is someone who understands the importance of the workers who put food on our tables. Ted Cruz has consistently sided with corporations and special interests, overlooking the struggles of the very workers who sustain our state. It’s time we retire him to Cancun,” said Ricky Burris, President of UFCW Local 1000.

The American Federation of Teachers and the United Food and Commercial Workers  joins the Texas AFL-CIO, American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA), National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU), International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), and the Texas State Legislative Board for Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen in supporting Allred’s candidacy.

He has also earned the backing of a broad coalition of leaders from across Texas including Congress members Veronica Escobar, Joaquin Castro, Lizzie Fletcher and Marc Veasey, State Senators César Blanco, José Menéndez, Carol Alvarado and Royce West, as well as local leaders including El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, and Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis.
