In Another Sign of Strong Momentum, Allred Earns Backing of Texas AFL-CIO
Austin, TX — Today, Congressman Colin Allred, a former union member who was part of the NFL Players Association, earned the endorsement of the Texas AFL-CIO. The endorsement required a two-thirds majority vote.
“The right to organize is a key piece of the economic freedom we believe in as Texans, and I know firsthand the protection, peace of mind and power that a union can bring,” said Allred. “As a former dues paying union member, it means so much to me to have earned this endorsement and the trust of Texas workers. I will always put working Texans first — whether that is fighting for good jobs, fair pay, safe conditions and the freedom to work free from discrimination. Ted Cruz is one of the most anti-union, anti-worker Senators in Congress, and in November we are going to replace him with someone who will fight for workers and their freedoms.”
“The delegates who represented union members across Texas were enthusiastic in putting their broad shoulders behind Colin Allred as he works to send Sen. Ted Cruz into the Cancun sunset,” Texas AFL-CIO President Rick Levy said in the union’s endorsement announcement. “The Texas AFL-CIO believes our endorsed candidates will fight for working families. We may not be able to write $6 million checks and we may not have our hands on the levers of state power, but we intend to fight for these candidates, worksite by worksite, union by union, and door by door.”
In addition to the Texas AFL-CIO, Allred has earned the backing of Houston Mayor Emeritus Sylvester Turner and Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price; Congressmembers Veronica Escobar, Lizzie Fletcher and Marc Veasey; Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins and Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis; State Senator Cesar Blanco and State Representatives Chris Turner, Rhetta Bowers, Toni Rose, Venton Jones, and Sheryl Cole; former State Senator Wendy Davis and TX-15 congressional candidate Michelle Vallejo; and many other Texas leaders.
Allred has also been endorsed by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), Congressional Black Caucus PAC, the College Democrats of America, the League of Conservation Voters, Foreign Policy for America, and End Citizens United // Let America Vote.
