Allred Statement on Supreme Court Decision Upholding Access to Mifepristone

DALLAS – Today, Congressman Colin Allred released the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to uphold access to mifepristone, an FDA-approved medicine commonly used in medication abortions.

“When and how to start a family should always be between a woman and her doctor – not politicians like Ted Cruz,” said Allred. “Mifepristone has been safe and legal for decades, and Ted Cruz and his extreme policies are responsible for putting this health care into question. As your Senator, I will always ensure women have access to the health care they need, including mifepristone, and restore freedom to Texas women and families.”

Allred has long championed protecting women’s right to access abortion, has been a leading voice against restricting women’s right to interstate travel, and has voted to codify Roe v. Wade’s protections to restore national abortion access. He also supports codifying protection for IVF in federal law and has worked to expand access to affordable birth control and over-the-counter contraception.

Ted Cruz signed onto an amicus brief falsely stating that mifepristone endangered patient safety and calling for increased restrictions on the drug. He has called the state ban threatening access to mifepristone “perfectly reasonable.” He has praised the fact that “in the state of Texas we have significant limits restricting abortion… and I agree with that.” Cruz fought for years to overturn Roe v. Wade, and proudly supports an abortion ban with no exceptions.
