Allred Statement on Deaths of Migrants Near Eagle Pass
Dallas, TX — Today, Congressman Colin Allred released the following statement on the drowning deaths of three migrants in the Rio Grande River near Eagle Pass last night after Governor Abbott’s state officials reportedly interfered with Border Patrol rescue operations:
“Two children and a woman drowned last night in what was an entirely preventable tragedy. It doesn’t have to be this way. We can secure our border without Governor Abbott’s extreme and cruel tactics. Texans know this, and this is not who we are.
“This is a federal problem and needs a federal solution. The Governor’s actions are irresponsible, deadly, and are getting in the way of Border Patrol doing their job.
“I have long said we need comprehensive reform. But now more than ever extreme politicians need to stop their political stunts and come to the table to form a real, bipartisan solution. That is something Ted Cruz has no interest in and something I will do as Senator.”
Rep. Allred voted against federally subsidizing Abbott’s ‘Operation Lone Star,’ as immigration enforcement is expressly a federal responsibility. Allred is proud to be a cosponsor of the Dignity Act, a bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform package led by El Paso Rep. Veronica Escobar.
