Allred Statement on 5th Circuit Ruling that Texas Hospitals are Not Required to Provide Life-Saving Emergency Care

Dallas, TX — Today, Congressman Colin Allred released the following statement on the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that hospital emergency rooms are not required to provide life-saving emergency abortion care if the state law, like in Texas, bans abortions:

“It’s incomprehensible that judges, lawyers and politicians are telling doctors they cannot save their patients’ lives. Banning hospitals from providing women with life-saving emergency care is cruel and it is not who we are as Texans.

“We must codify Roe v. Wade to enshrine commonsense protections for all women at the federal level, and end this nightmare for Texas women.”

Last week, Allred wrote an op-ed in the Dallas Morning News on the real-world impacts of Texas’ draconian abortion laws, championed by extreme Republicans like Ted Cruz, who called the overturning of Roe a “massive victory.”
