Allred Releases Statement on Cruz Voting Against Confirming General Charles Brown as Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

Dallas, TX — Today, Congressman Colin Allred released the following statement on Ted Cruz voting tonight against confirming native Texan and Air Force Chief of Staff, General Charles Brown, to serve as Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff:

“Tonight, Ted Cruz tried to block the confirmation of an eminently qualified Texan as Chairman of Joint Chiefs. Only ten other Senators joined him.

Ted Cruz is so committed to taking away women’s freedom to make their own decisions that he would endanger our nation’s military readiness, not to mention deny Texas of an historic nomination.

Cruz’s extreme partisanship is shameful. It’s long past time Texans had a Senator whose team is Texas, and puts our national security first.”

Charles Brown, a graduate of the Texas Tech University Air Force ROTC, is the first African-American to serve as Chief of Staff of a branch of the United States Armed Forces.

Despite the efforts of his own home state Senator, General Brown was confirmed tonight to serve as Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff with an 83-11 vote.
