Allred on Texas Supreme Court Zurawski Decision: “We are here because of Texas’ extreme abortion ban, which Ted Cruz proudly supports”

DALLAS –  Congressman Colin Allred released the following statement after the Texas Supreme Court’s decision in Zurawski v. Texas, denying challenges to Texas’ extreme abortion ban brought by 20 women who were denied medically necessary abortions. 

“To force someone to carry out a nonviable pregnancy – at risk to her own life – is outrageous. This decision allows Texas’ extreme abortion ban to continue to endanger women and deny them the health care they need,” said Allred. “We are here because of Texas’ extreme abortion ban, which Ted Cruz proudly supports and called ‘perfectly reasonable.’ I continue to be inspired by the bravery of Amanda Zurawski and the other women involved in this case. This ban has gone way too far, and in the Senate, I will fight to restore the freedoms of Texas women, and ensure that medical decisions are always between women and their doctors – not politicians like Ted Cruz.” 

Allred has long championed protecting women’s right to access abortion, has been a leading voice against restricting women’s right to interstate travel, and has voted to codify Roe v. Wade’s protections to restore national abortion access. He also supports codifying protection for IVF in federal law and has worked to expand access to affordable birth control and over-the-counter contraception. 

Ted Cruz has called the state ban that denied the 20 plaintiffs medically necessary abortions “perfectly reasonable.” He has praised the fact that “in the state of Texas we have significant limits restricting abortion… and I agree with that.” Cruz fought for years to overturn Roe v. Wade, and proudly supports an abortion ban with no exceptions. He also praised Texas’ near-total abortion ban, under consideration in today’s decision, calling it “perfectly reasonable.”
