ICYMI: Allred Hosts Discussion on Restoring Texas Women’s Freedom with Amarillo Reproductive Freedom Alliance

DALLAS – On Wednesday, June 19, Congressman Colin Allred hosted a virtual discussion with Dr. Austin Dennard, an OBGYN who had to flee Texas to get a medically necessary abortion, and leadership from the Amarillo Reproductive Freedom Alliance (ARFA). The group discussed the dangerous circumstances Texas women are living under due to the state’s abortion ban that goes too far, as well as ARFA’s successful effort to stop a recent travel ban that would have forbid the use of the city’s roads to seek an abortion out of state.

During the virtual discussion Allred said, “We’re only here having this discussion because of extremists like Ted Cruz who have championed these laws, and we can’t stand back and allow women in Texas to become prisoners in their own state.

Allred has long championed protecting women’s right to access an abortion, and has voted to codify Roe v. Wade’s protections to restore national abortion access. He has also been a leading voice against restricting women’s right to interstate travel, supports codifying protection for IVF in federal law and has worked to expand access to affordable birth control and over-the-counter contraception.

Ted Cruz fought for years to overturn Roe v. Wade, and proudly supports an abortion ban with no exceptions. Cruz has called Texas’ own near-total abortion ban “perfectly reasonable and praised the fact that “in the state of Texas we have significant limits restricting abortion,” saying, “I agree with that.”
