With Third Texas Legislature Special Session Underway, Allred Releases Statement Denouncing Taxpayer Dollars Being Used for Private School Vouchers

Dallas, TX — Today, with the Texas Legislature’s third Special Session of the year underway, Congressman Colin Allred released the following statement denouncing legislation to use taxpayer dollars for private school vouchers:

“As a product of Dallas ISD, and the son of a public school teacher, I know how important the public education system is to our communities and to our kids. Texas shouldn’t be diverting taxpayer dollars from public education to private schools. We should be investing in our public school students and teachers, and the future of our state.

Unlike Ted Cruz, who has consistently championed taking taxpayer dollars from public schools to fund private schools, in the Senate, I will continue working to increase federal funding for public education so that all Texas students, regardless of who they are or where they live, can access a quality public education. I urge all members of the Texas Legislature to reject this voucher scheme and instead work to invest more into Texas’ public school students, teachers, and facilities.”

Ted Cruz has for years rallied behind this effort to defund Texas public schools, recently calling it “the civil rights issue of the 21st century.” Cruz also vowed to campaign against Republicans willing to stand up to this program that would dramatically roll back opportunities and resources for underserved young students in Texas’ rural and urban communities alike.
